National Institute of Ecology (NIE President: Park Yong-mok) affiliate of the Ministry of Environment has contracted non-exclusive license of ‘Wildlife monitoring system and methodology’ patent to transfer it to NatureOne at 21st of July.

The ceremony was done under minimal attendance of NIE NatureOne and KIP. KIP Intellectual Property Exchange was in charge of arbitration and consultation. Non-exclusive license ensures right of third party to commercially work on patented invention registered utility model and registered design under restricted time place and content.

The patent that is going to transferred is a technology that collects recognition and environment information of wildlife through camera sensors and analyzes their ecology. It was patented at May 27th 2019.

NIE research team combined AI with information and communication technology to improve manual process of big data and overcome human error that occurs during the collection of wildlife information. The technology made possible to analyze ecology of animals through recognition and environment information of wildlife collected by camera sensors that are installed in habitats like mountains and rivers.

Under conventional method it took 8 hours for a person to classify animals in 2 to 3 thousand videos. The technology shortened it to 30 minutes. In the future the technology will be developed for advanced use such as research on actual condition of zoonotic diseases harmful animals introduced species and endangered species.

NatureOne is a company that produces unmanned sensor camera capture transmitter traps etc. They are planning to develop ‘AI based wildlife infrageneric classification software’.

President Park said that after 8 years of existence there are a lot of remarkable IPs accumulated that may be applied to ecological technology. He also added that he will make efforts to develop digital and green restoration technology to realize carbon neutral society.
